Karen A. Carroll Obituary

Karen Carroll passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, surrounded by the love of family and friends.

She was a devoted wife, sister, aunt, and friend. Her life was defined by compassion, intelligence, humor, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. She had a rare gift for understanding people—a gift she used to comfort, guide, and inspire everyone around her.

Karen was a proud graduate of Saint Joseph's University, Class of 1979, and The Catholic University of America, Class of 1986, where she earned her master's in social work, pursuing her calling in psychology and counseling.

Karen spent over 12 years as a clinical psychotherapist, working with Catholic Social Services and in private practice, helping countless individuals and families navigate life's challenges with dignity and hope.

She also served the State of New Jersey Department of Labor, retiring in April 2024 as Director of the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. Affectionately nicknamed "Captain Obvious" by her colleagues and husband, Karen was admired for her sharp wit, clear thinking, and sense of humor that could brighten even the toughest days.

Karen lived with courage and purpose, guided by Theodore Roosevelt's speech "Man in the Arena," a passage she cherished and shared with her father, Fred Kroll, in particular:

"It is not the critic who counts... The credit belongs to the one who is actually in the arena... who strives valiantly... who spends himself in a worthy cause."

She was preceded in passing by her father, Fred Kroll, and her stepfather, Art Balek.

Karen is survived by her loving husband, Robert Carroll; her mother, Hildegarde (née Frankin, formerly Kroll) and stepfather, Art Balek; her sisters, Anita (Kroll) McDonnell (Brian) and Michele (Kroll) Gordon (Dave); her nieces, Hanna (McDonnell) Savitt (Adam), Hilary (McDonnell) Jacobs (Greg), Lily Gordon (Eric), Lucy, and Sofie; and three grandnieces and one grandnephew.

On a personal note:

Karen was the love of my life—my partner, my home. I adored her, simply and completely. I often marvel at how lucky I was that we found each other. Out of everything in this world, we got us. I will carry that with me always—with gratitude, quiet pride, and a love that never ends.

She will be remembered for her warmth, strength, humor, and the extraordinary love she gave so freely. Her memory will live on in the countless hearts she touched.

The funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at 12:00pm at St. Ignatius Catholic Church 999 Reading Avenue Yardley, PA 19067. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:30am to 11:45am at the church.
