Douglas E. Sherwood Obituary

Douglas E. Sherwood, 82, of Yardley, PA, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

Doug was born on August 21,1943, to Edith and Elliott Sherwood in Charleston, West Virginia, where he grew up. He was a lifetime proud West Virginian.

Doug served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War as a meteorologist. He was stationed briefly in Vietnam before moving to Tak Li, Thailand for a year. He also served at Andrew’s AFB, Maryland as a meteorologist to Air Force One and Air Force Two, Ramstein AFB, West Germany and McGuire AFB, New Jersey. While serving in the military he earned a master’s degree in meteorology and an MBA. He previously had B.S. degrees in Math and Physics from the University of Charleston in West Virginia.

Upon leaving the Air Force, Doug began a career in Management Consulting with Kurt Salmon Associates in the apparel manufacturing industry working throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Jamaica updating factories. He later worked for British Aerospace Systems as a network administrator.

Doug and his family moved to Yardley, PA 40 years ago. He was very active in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church serving as an acolyte, lay reader, lay eucharistic minister, a Vestry member, and serving on the Wapiti Camp board of directors and the Diocesan Council in Philadelphia.

Doug was involved in theater as a student in college and supported and sometimes acted at the Bristol Riverside Theater and supported the Walnut Theater as well as many Broadway theaters in NYC. He acted at various times with the St. Andrew’s Players. Doug was a longtime member of Theta Xi fraternity as well as many honorary fraternities. Doug supported Christians in the Holy Land as a Knight’s Templar with Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem (SMOTJ) as well as serving the order in many capacities. He recently was awarded SMOTJ’s highest honor for his devoted duty, The Order of the Grand Choix.

Travel and cruising with his wife, Carol, took them all over the world. They visited all 50 states and most of Europe, the Caribbean, Panama (with son Chuck), Israel, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Bora Bora and many more.

Doug fought an aggressive cancer for over two years with strong will and faith. He is survived by his wife, Carol of Yardley, son Chuck of Maui, Hawaii, brother, Reuel of Tamarack, Florida and grandson Mason of Ft. Meyer’s, Florida.

Doug loved a good joke and loved telling them. He will be missed by his church family, SMOTJ brothers/sisters, theater pals and most of all his family and dear friends as well as his dear cat, Bella. We want to thank the medical staC at the University of Pennsylvania, the U of Penn Infusion Chemo Center in Yardley and St. Mary's Hospital for their dedicated care.  His final days were at Chandler Hall where he received outstanding hospice care.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Yardley, the SMOTJ Scholarship Fund, or the Bristol Riverside Theatre.

Doug’s memorial service and military burial of ashes will take place on May 31, 2026, at 11am at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church 47 West Afton Ave. Yardley, PA 19067.
