TRIBUTE TO A CHAMPION
The batsman was in great form, his strokes both crisp and clean,
He’d batted to 46, three figures was his dream.
On a wicket he’d grown up on playing with his mates side by side,
He led from the front with courage and humility - from a challenge he would never hide.
He’d always been a fighter, for those around him he strove to be the best,
And like all proud Kiwis, he dreamed of wearing the silver fern upon his chest.
He’d honed his craft in Northcote - a young boy standing tall amongst the men,
He was surely bound for higher honors - it was just a case of when.
He’d cut and hooked and slashed his way to get to 46,
And then a ball sat up and nicked his blade, and whistled towards the slips.
He must have thought “how’d I miss that chance to smash another four?”,
As eleven white clothed angels cradled him at the foot of heaven’s door.
He’s padded up in heaven now - on the best wicket he’s ever been,
Alongside New Zealand’s greats, it must be quite the scene.
He is forever chasing the 54 more runs he needs for that majestic ton,
And the glory, the mateship, that chance to shine - sadly it cannot be done.
We’ve lost a legend in Adan - ‘Big Shitter’ to all his mates,
The big man with the even bigger smile, he was truly one of the greats.
46 years isn’t enough - we wish you’d had some more,
You’ve left us far too early - our tears won’t flow, they’ll pour.
So raise your bat Adan Powley - a champion there is no doubt,
Forever in our hearts you remain - 46 not out.
Kua hinga te tōtara o Te Waonui a Tāne [A mighty Totara tree from the forest of Tāne has fallen]

We have had the privilege of knowing Adan since he started dating Maggie many years ago. Although we did not see them often, when we did visit Adan was the best host. He made us feel welcome. He was kind and considerate.
We stayed at the same hotel last year with Adan, Maggie and their kids. He was great with his kids and even our grandkids. His love for Maggie was palpable.
The untimely death of Adan will be a great void to so many. but unbearable for his wife Maggie and their 3 kids. God bless you all.

We are sending you love and a warm embrace during this difficult time. Adam and I enjoyed getting to know Adan at various events that William and Hollis participated in together, including birthday parties and Fantasy Football. Adan was so genuine and such a pleasure to talk to—truly a wonderful human who will be missed greatly.
With deep condolences,

Dear Maggie, Stan, Melanie and all the family please accept my deepest condolences and sympathy. I was absolutely shattered and devastated to hear the news of Adan's passing. I've known Adan since he was at Northcote College and then had the privilege of being his mate all through Auckland University Law School and then in our early years of work at Russell McVeagh and travelling that journey with him. Adan was always the guy that lit up a room with his big presence and big personality. He was such a friendly lovely guy with such a big heart and he was always someone you knew you would have a great laugh and a good time with. He was one of those rare types that always made you smile and always left a lasting good impression on you. Just a wonderful bloke and a top individual. It breaks my heart to think he is no longer with us. My heart goes out to Maggie and their wonderful kids - sending you all my love and prayers and all my thoughts are with you at this tough time. Taking a seat next to Adan during my very first lecture at Auckland University, I had no idea he would come to play such a significant role in many of the most formative and treasured moments of my life. From forming a close-knit group of friends throughout university to navigating our first professional jobs together, Adan was always at the heart of our adventures. Whether we were enjoying long post-lecture lunches outside the Davis Law Library, meeting for our 10:00am coffee club at the Vero Centre, or demonstrating the “Powely whip” on a dance floor somewhere in the Viaduct, Adan was always in the thick of it.
Reflecting on our journey, it's Adan’s maturity and good-natured kindness that stand out. During those formative years of university and first jobs when the world seemed so vast and intimidating, those qualities of Adan were a constant source of support. Adan, I will miss you enormously. It feels strange to think we won't be able to get the gang all together for another night out.
Maggie, Stan, Melanie, Adelaide, William and Declan – our hearts go out to you. We are holding you close in our thoughts and sending all our love during this incredibly difficult time.

Adan was just the best and I miss him very much. Always thoughtful, approachable, authentic.. so smart and great at connecting with people.
Careers twist in many directions and like family, we usually don’t get to pick our co-workers. But they sit next to us each day for weeks, months and years and in many cases, for years at a time, we spend more time with our work family than our biological family. In this I was lucky to sit across from Adan for much of the past 6 years. Hearing him on countless phone calls, explaining that he was from “waaay down south”, always with a chuckle... I close my eyes and see him pacing the corridor around his desk, tossing a mini football between his hands, expertly explaining the caveats of his work. I enjoyed talking with him about our families, the Eagles, our pools, and so much more. I recall how he always enjoyed tuning in for the annual NFL draft to see who might become part of our Eagles.. saying how he enjoyed it as much as any part of the game. Adan, I know you’ll be watching over us and if anyone has any say in it, you’ll definitely be a first rounder. Heartfelt condolences to his wife and his family. May his memory be eternal.

Dear Maggie and family, I enjoyed working with Adan! When I was a relative newbie and attending a conference, Adan was one of the first individuals to greet me and introduce me to other teammates. This was his way. Always willing to lend a helping hand and support others. He was a wealth of knowledge that he offered to share with others to make their jobs easier. He spoke often of his children. My heart goes out to them and his family. God bless.

I remember this special event when Adan passed his law exam.
Stan and Melanie had a beautiful party at their home.
There was delicious food, both Melanie and Stan are great cooks and very hospitable and their handsome, smart, kind son went into their footsteps.
He gave a wonderful speech. There was so much love, happiness and laughter.
So many good friends.
Beautiful memory.
God bless
Fondly

Dear Maggie, Stan, Melanie and all the family, we are absolutely devastated to hear of the passing of Adan. Adan was such a fabulous friend at University, at our first 'real' jobs at Russell McVeagh in Auckland, NZ, and as we navigated moves abroad, marriages, babies, and life. Adan was a great work friend, always there to share ideas and frustrations as we figured out how to navigate the corporate world, but also a fabulous 'off duty' friend, with lots of late nights enjoying ourselves in bars and clubs across New Zealand, the UK and the US. I also have very fond memories of house parties at Melanie and Stan's house on the Shore!! Adan was a big guy, with a big heart and an even bigger smile. Maggie, I so enjoyed our time spent together in London and my heart bleeds for you and the kids. We send you all our love and thoughts and will be raising a flaming sambuca to Adan on Sunday. It has been a privilege to have Adan as a colleague and a friend over the last 8 years. He was so well respected across our organization because, not only was he incredibly smart and hard working, but he was also exceptionally kind. He never missed an opportunity to help and mentor others. When I took on a new role with the Bank, he took the initiative to check in with me to make sure that I was supported and to offer his seemingly endless words of encouragement. I will always remember his soup lunches, which he often ate while walking around the office and catching up with friends. We would all bond over parenthood and Adan’s pride for her children was inspiring. His desk was filled with photos of his family, and he literally covered an entire blank wall in our office with his children’s artwork. He smiled ear to ear whenever he talked about his family and their latest adventures. Words cannot express how much Adan will be missed in our office.

First and foremost my deepest condolences to Maggie and the kids. I know how much he loved you all, it came across in his face when he spoke about you.
I met Adan on what was the first day at Merrill for both of us. I was fortunate to have him as a friend from day 1. We were close at work, literally sitting next to each other for quite some time but we also shared many a laugh and story about our lives that openly displayed his love for his family, travel, and his life experiences (and the Eagles). Even outside of work, he was there that one time I broke my ankle which we (eventually) shared many a laugh about too. Even as we’ve moved to different roles at work where we see each other less he still would have an encouraging word about my fantasy football picks, making me feel like my mistakes were secret sleepers that would eventually pay off.
I am very glad that we crossed paths, Adan brought good vibes, a joyous smile, and a memorable hearty laugh to our time together. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace Kiwi.

Maggie, my heart is breaking for you and your family. You are in our thoughts. Shelly, Pop and I are here for you.
I just thought of Adan the other morning as I dug out my "painting" shoes from the back of the closet. As I sat on the stairs tying them, I remembered when Adan took the time to drive me in the KIWI plated FX to pick them out. I'm not sure why I had to get sneakers, but I remember him being generous with his time and and obsessed with getting the Android predictive keyboard onto his iPhone.
I was only occasionally in his life, but his kind nature left a lasting impression on me.

I worked with Adan over the past three years on a daily basis, and got to know him well over that time. I enjoyed doing so immensely and I respected his work ethic and work style very much. He was a consummate professional, who was always willing to help you and to support you, and he was a champion of those on his team, myself included.
On a personal note, I found Adan to have a sharp mind and a keen sense of humor and we connected instantly through our shared experience of being attorneys in the past-paced financial world.
I have found myself thinking about Adan frequently this week, and miss him terribly, as I am sure is the case with all of his friends and family. I extend my sincerest condolences to Adan's wife and children, and family, both here as well as back in New Zealand. He was an exceptional man.
