Herb, you were a truly remarkable person—kind, warm, and deeply cherished by everyone who had the privilege of knowing you. Over the past 20 years, I treasured every moment and interaction we shared. Your loss is heartbreaking, and you will be profoundly missed.
Rest in peace, my friend. The ETS family has lost one of its best.

I have had the privilege of working with Herb for over 20 years at ETS, and he is a treasured friend.
Herb had an amazing level of dedication not just to ETS, but more importantly to the people who work here. He always did whatever he could to assist, mentor, encourage and de-stress anyone within his influence. He was always calm, smart, knowledgeable, and made every project he was involved in better by his presence.
His amazing humor and positivity have brightened many a busy and stressful time. A chat message from Herb always brings a smile because there's a chance a great one-liner is coming. In the last year of being back in the office, one of the best parts of my morning is to swing by Herb's office and chat.
Herb is one of the most wonderful souls I have had the pleasure to know. His loss is something that I cannot yet fully comprehend.
My deepest condolences to Herb's family. Know that he will be dearly missed.

It’s with a heavy heart and deep sadness that I write this, as I still can’t believe he’s gone. I had the privilege of working alongside him for decades, and in all that time, he was so much more than just a colleague. His personality was larger than life, and he had the most incredible sense of humor. Even in the most serious situations, he knew how to make people laugh, lightening the mood with a well-timed comment or a side conversation during meetings. He had a way of making everything better with just his presence.
It brings tears to my eyes to think that he’s no longer with us. How could he leave this world so soon? He was still working until the very last minute, calling me "trouble" with his usual playful smile. He always made sure to express his gratitude for the help he received from my teams, leaving behind notes of appreciation that now feel like cherished memories. The ETS hallways will never be the same without him walking through them, bringing his warmth, humor, and energy.
Heaven must be incredibly lucky to have him now, but it’s so hard to imagine he’s really gone. My dear friend, you will be terribly missed. May your soul rest in peace, and may God give strength to your family, friends, and all of us here at ETS who were blessed to know you. You’ll live on in our hearts forever.
Here’s a team picture we recently took at a farewell party. You can see a beam of light shining on him in the back—it feels , as though he’s still the light in the room even now.

I am heartbroken over Herb’s passing. He was a genuine and sincere leader, mentor, and friend who always went out of his way to help others. I will never forget how he supported me on a major case, even though we had just met through a colleague—without hesitation, he coordinated experts across departments to solve the issue together. On campus, he was always kind, sincere, and occasionally surprised us with his dry humor. You could feel his passion for his work and his care for the company and everyone around him. It still feels unreal that he is gone. Words cannot fully express this loss.
Mary Ann, Amanda, and Emily, my deepest condolences to you. Please take care of yourselves and lean on those who care about you during this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

My haircutting appointments with Herb will be greatly missed, from talking about our families to food (especially hard shell crabs) to music and his love for stereos and records and Herb giving my son a stereo that he fixed up. I am heartbroken over the loss of such a special colleague, leader, and friend.
Herb was the most popular colleague and leader. He had a way of connecting with everyone—whether they were cheerful or cranky, introverted or outgoing. No matter the situation, he could ease tensions with his quick wit and effortless charm, always finding a solution that never put anyone in a difficult spot.
He was the most empathetic colleague. I will always be grateful for the time he took to listen to my frequent complaints about work issues, and he would come up with thoughtful solutions that worked for everyone. He not only resonated with our frustrations that came with difficult situations but also worked to remove hurdles or make things easier for us.
He was the most diligent colleague. He worked tirelessly, spanning all time zones of our delivery groups (he knew the term so well…). He was green on Teams channel around the clock.
He was respected and deeply loved beyond ETS. The NEEA team in China, whom he worked so closely with for decades, was so devastated upon hearing the news that they had to pause their internal meeting. That speaks volumes about the impact he had on people.
He had the best sense of humor and was both a colleague, leadership, and a friend. We coined phrases together, like “the wolves are chasing after us” when projects piled up. It was little things like that—inside jokes, shared struggles, and his steady presence—that made working with him so special, fun, and successful.
His talent, kindness, and contributions left an indelible mark on so many lives, including mine. It is hard to imagine a world without him. I will always carry his memory with me. It was a great privilege to have known him.

I’ve spent 36 years working with Herb, but my first meeting with him was social, not professional. More than 200 ETSers used to play in our intermural softball league. Sharing a cold one with Herb after a game was enhanced with talks at first about sports and work, but then more importantly about becoming fathers at the same time, and the joy of family. The personal connection we shared carried on for decades, during family gatherings at ETS, many joint work projects, and our usual late-night calls with China. It was a blessing to call him a friend and coworker.

Herb was the heart and soul of ETS. His love for the company was evident in the way he went out of his way to help others succeed. He never said no to anyone looking for help in any area, and was more than willing to sit down and listen to the problem. Full of positive energy and a caring heart, it put a smile on anyone who ran into Herb in the hallways or in the cafeteria. For me personally, I always got the message "Everything will be ok" and very selfishly, I would look for him to chat, during tough times. I will miss Herb, and I wish I could have spent more time with him. I spoke to him earlier that week, but I wish I had spent more time with him.

After the death of my father, Herb shared this poem written by an extremely gifted 8th grader that, 18 plus years later, I still cherish:
Ticking and tocking, the clock has never stopped. Gazing out the window on a cool April day. Thought flooding my mind. He’ll be okay, its okay,
dreading the moment the clock
will stop. The phone rings; shivers
blast up my spine,
the tears, the pain, shooting
in my heart. Words come
screaming up my throat,
but I stay as silent as the clock,
no longer ticking and tocking.
I scamper outside to get lost
from the emotion filling the air,
to the big cherry blossom tree,
blowing my tears away.
The memories, exploding
in my mind only make
the tears cascade more and more,
pounding into the ground.
Thinking this can’t be true the clock hasn’t stopped,
so young, so loved, why?
Why has the clock stopped ticking and tocking?
Why now? I rush inside to hide in my bed
like I was three again, except I’m not playing a game,
I’m hoping not to be found, to not face
what lies ahead.
Upon hearing of Herb’s passing, this poem is the first thing I thought of. The unbearable hole in our hearts. The memories with Herb, Mary Ann, Amanda, and Emily, all of which bring a smile to my face. But most of all, the sheer love that our whole family has for this wonderful man.
