Mark Peter Maguire, 74, of Langhorne, PA, passed away on June 22, 2025, from complications from a stroke at home with his wife and caregiver by his side.
Mark was born on March 30, 1951, in Hoboken, NJ, to Edward and Severna Maguire. He graduated from Pequannock Township High School and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering at Lafayette College. He began his career as a chemical engineer at Rohm and Haas Company. After 5 years working at Rohm and Haas, Mark went to The Wharton School and earned an MBA in Finance.
Following graduation, he accepted a position with the Scott Paper Company as a financial analyst, then as an Accounting Controller for Smith Kline Beckman. He moved on to be the Accounting Controller for Smith Kline Beckman and was promoted to the Controller's position overseas in Tokyo, Japan. From Smith Kline, he worked in finance for 3 years for a start-up company. Then in 1993, he did a full circle returning to Rohm and Haas Company as the General Manager for their offices in Bangkok, Thailand. In 1996, Mark was awarded the Rohm and Haas Chairman's award for his accomplishments in Thailand. Mark retired from his corporate career in 2005 as President of Rohm and Haas Japan, KK in Tokyo, Japan.
After Mark left Rohm & Haas and returned from Asia to live in the U.S. full-time, he embarked on his next big project. In 2006 he decided to invest his time, expertise, and efforts to support Philadelphia's current and future entrepreneurs via SCORE. That choice required him to turnaround the decertified Philadelphia Chapter of the national organization by rebuilding the not-for-profit business consulting organization and recruiting an all-volunteer "workforce" to provide mentoring and programs for aspiring business owners. As a part of that effort, he worked with the Wharton Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to establish a program matching MBA students with start-ups in all lines of business. During the 15 years of his active stewardship, he personally worked with over 500 entrepreneurs plus arranged or moderated more than 30 workshops. As a result of his tireless dedication, he had an immeasurable impact on the lives of the hundreds of volunteers and the thousands of entrepreneurs who participated in his vision.
In addition to working and traveling for business in Asia, Mark and Cynthia took time off to go to Australia. After returning to the U.S., they enjoyed cruises to Antarctica and Alaska. Mark was on the more adventurous side and went on a safari to Africa with the Penn Alumni Association Travel. Mark was able to achieve his goal of visiting all 7 continents.
Mark is preceded in death by his father and mother, Edward and Severna. Mark is survived by his wife Cynthia, his brother Alan, and his many cousins, nieces and nephew, and great nieces and nephews.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at 11:00am at St. Ignatius of Antioch Catholic Church, 999 Reading Avenue, Yardley, PA 19067. Visitation for family and friends will be from 10:00am to 11:00am at the church.
Memorial donations may be made to Broad Street Love, P. O. Box 22656, Philadelphia, PA 19110 (www.broadstreetlove.org). This organization was one of Mark's favorite ones to support because he felt they are rooted in love, compassion and the belief that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity. Supporting this organization makes great things possible—meals served, clothes shared, personal care provided, and guests welcomed with dignity and respect.
Cynthia wishes to extend her gratitude to Mark's caregivers and to Penn Hospice Care for the excellent care they provided for Mark.
Arrangements are under the care of the FitzGerald-Sommer Funeral Home 17 S. Delaware Avenue Yardley, PA 19067. Condolences for the family can be left at www.fitzgeraldsommerfuneralhome.com.
