Augustus "Gus" N. Rogers, Jr. of New Hope, Pennsylvania, passed away on July 15, 2025. Gus was born on June 2, 1944, in Washington DC. Gus's formative years were spent in St. Albans, Queens, playing basketball in the school yard and making lifelong friends. Gus often talked about traveling throughout the 5 boroughs of New York City with his friends and brother, William. One of his oldest and dearest friends,Richard Greene (known as Uncle Richard by his children) befriended Gus in the 7th grade and they remained friends for life. Gus cherished spending summers in Virgina with his brothers Louis and William and visiting relatives.
Gus was a standout basketball player at Newtown High School in Elmhurst, Queens, and earned a scholarship to Albright College where he met his future wife Elizabeth (Libby). Gus and Libby were married in 1964 after welcoming son Andre into the family. Daughter Nicole (Nikki) was born in 1972.
Gus had an extremely successful career with Merck Pharmaceuticals, retiring in 2000 after achieving the title of Senior Director of IT Security. While at Merck, Gus successfully completed an Executive MBA program at Columbia University. He was part of the mentoring team that worked to improve diversity at Merck, often recruiting prospective candidates from Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Gus was preceded in death by his parents, Augustus N. Rogers, Sr. and Gracie Britt Rogers Parish, his brother Louis Rogers, and grandson Mitchell Alexander Rogers. He is survived by his wife, Libby, son Andre (wife, Robin), daughter Nicole (husband, John), brother William (life partner, Bea), grandsons Christopher, Andre Jr. and Miles, granddaughter Cheyenne and great grandson, Leo. Gus will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews who loved being in his presence and listening to him tell the same stories repeatedly! Gus was also blessed to have "bonus" grandchildren, Alexa (husband, Andrew), Austin, Taylar (husband, Hunter) and "bonus" great-grandchildren, Ambrose, Opal and Jackson.
After retiring from Merck, Gus and Libby spent their time traveling to Martha's Vineyard, Vero Beach, Florida and socializing with their broad group of friends. Gus, in his 20's and 30's, was still playing pick-up basketball and schooling the younger generation! Wherever he resided, Gus was extremely active in local politics supporting the Democratic party, getting the vote out, and working at polling stations.
Gus was known for his love of family and friends and his devotion to his wife of 61 years, Libby. For many years Gus served as her primary caretaker and through his love and devotion, supported her battle with Alzheimer's. Gus was admired for his strong character, quiet sense of humor and his commitment to the advancement of African-Americans.
The family would like to thank Gus's care takers and the staff at Sunrise Senior Living in Yardley for their compassion and devotion to their calling.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at FitzGerald-Sommer Funeral Home 17 S. Delaware Avenue,Yardley, PA 19067. Another visitation is scheduled for Friday, July 25, 2025, at The Second Baptist Church at 6055 Swamp Rd., Fountainville, PA. at 9:00am with the church services beginning promptly at 11:00am
