Obituary of Stanford L. Engel

Dr. Stanford Engel of Morrisville died in his home on the morning of Thursday, May 16, at the age of 94. He was born on July 26, 1924, to Charles and Sadie (Cantor) Engel. Stan was inclined to appreciate what is good in life, and not dwell on disappointments. He was passionate about the sciences. He attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, graduating with the class of 1944, received his doctorate from Columbia University, and spent most of his career in the pharmaceutical industry, retiring from Bristol-Myers Squibb. He was a great fan of opera, and of the arts in general. He loved literature, and could be found in his favorite chair reading almost every day until his passing. He enjoyed travel, both for work and pleasure, always taking in an opera when the opportunity arose. Most of all, he loved his family and cherished the simple joy of friendship. That he was able to end his days in his own home is due largely to the love and support those friends returned. Stan was deeply grateful for this, as is his far-flung family. Preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Marvin Engel, he is survived by his sister, Dr. Natalie Torrey, sister-in-law Suzanne (Engel) Schleich, nephews Daniel Torrey and Dr. Ethan Torrey and his wife Tricia, nieces Dr. Pamela Brewer and her husband Jim Brown, Ina Engel, Deborah Watson and her husband Randy, and Jessica Torrey, and grand-nephews Kaden Peterson, Owen Peterson and Samuel Peterson. At Stan's request, there will be no memorial service.
