Obituary of Frederick Petrella

Please share a memory of Frederick to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Frederick Petrella July 22, 1945- April 15, 2020 Fred passed away a short time after contracting Covid-19. Fred is survived by his wife Elaine Petrella, his two daughters Cristen Lauzon and Jackie Petrella, his son-in-law Rod Lauzon and his two grandsons Jackson Lauzon and Ryan Lauzon. Fred graduated from Jersey City Teachers College and Seton Hall University. He was a longtime teacher in the Morris Plains School District. He was Principal at Stepping Stone School, Chief School Administrator at Sage Day School, and Adjunct Professor of Education at Raritan Valley College. Fred was a Decorated Combat Veteran of the Vietnam War 1969-1970. He was a Recipient of the Bronze Star for Meritorious Achievement. Fred was an accomplished author and he was especially proud of his last book, What's Cool and Cruel About School. Fred was a disciplined runner and cyclist. He was even running the halls of his assisted living a few days before he went to the hospital. Fred was lucky enough to have a life long love story and happy marriage of nearly 52 years with his college sweetheart Elaine. Fred was the kindest, most amazing father and taught his daughters with humor and love. He was a true #GirlDad. Fred was great with kids of all ages. He loved to make them laugh, calm them down, play ball with them, coach them, hear their stories and teach them. He loved being Papa to Jackson and Ryan. He loved watching whatever game they were playing in, or tossing a ball for hours with them. Although he loved the Yankees he enjoyed watching his grandsons' games the most. They have many happy memories of their Papa that will last them a lifetime. Fred was fond of a good Happy Hour. Talking, laughing, nibbles and drinks (Manhattans, Wine, Coka-Cola. ). For years he searched with his son-in-law for the best buffalo wings and often joked about writing a book about their quest. There isn't a single person who ever met Fred that didn't love him. He drew people in and brightened any room he walked in to. He was charismatic and captivated people with his stories and his smile. Fred was hands down the funniest person, he was the best dancer and made everything fun. His kindness was unmatched. Fred leaves behind an unfillable hole and many happy memories. The family plans on throwing a party in Fred's honor when social distancing is a thing of the past. We hope to toast Fred and hear everyone's stories.
