Roland made a lasting impression on me as my professor at Columbia and later as a colleague at The New York Times. Always stylish, he had a wonderful sense of humor, slightly sardonic but belied by his gentle nature. So sorry to hear the news and condolences to his family.
Roland was a valued colleague who was my right-hand man and counsel for many years on the Styles Desk of The New York Times. We had a lot of laughs together as well, and he made coming to work on a difficult section much easier. He also kept giving me advice on how to protect my health (most of which I was too dumb to follow). He will be missed greatly -- by a great many people. -- Joe Siano
