Kathleen "Kay" Joyce Mooney Rupprecht
Our beloved Kathleen was called home to our Savior on April 13, 2017. Kay was 89 years young, born in Trenton, New Jersey, the eldest daughter to Joseph and Mary Mooney of Olden Avenue. She maintained a home in Liverpool, NY for the past 50 years. She led her life fully, in faith and service to her family and others. Kay graduated from Cathedral High School in Trenton, NJ and attended Georgian Court College on a full scholarship, receiving a degree in Math and graduating with high honors, Magna Cum Laude. She also attended Temple University as well as completed graduate courses in education, counseling and social work at Syracuse University. Her love of knowledge and drive for a college education was instilled in her children and grandchildren.
Kay was first employed by RCA, and worked with some of the early pioneers of the computer age. She is co-author of published work in this field. She dedicated time to raise her five children, and then returned later to the workforce to help start the Senior Companion Program in Syracuse, as its first director working for and with Catholic Charities and the Onondaga County Metropolitan Commission on Aging. Additionally, she worked for United Way of Central New York, and the Diocese of Syracuse New York Commission on the Elderly. Her last role was as a Senior Companion to her dear friend Katharine DuPont Weymouth. Throughout her life, Kay was often a volunteer, working on projects at St. Joseph the Worker Church in Liverpool with her beloved spouse Robert. She founded the Tulip Street Center, and supported the Eucharistic Ministry and Parish Council all of which benefited from her dedicated time and attention.
In addition to her family and service, Kay enjoyed oil painting, piano, playing bridge, enjoyment of the local arts in and around Syracuse, and the simple idyllic pursuits of a good walk on the beach, or reading a book. Kay had the opportunity to travel late in life, and visited her extended family in Ireland, as well as explored England, Hungary, and Egypt.
Kay lived her life with a spirit of grace, much joy, many smiles, and gave generously of her time and talent. Kay is pre-deceased by her husband Robert, her son Gregory, her brother Joseph and her parents. She is survived by her cherished children Kevin (Cete), Judy (Charlie) Kapernaros, Leslie (Gary) Gasparini, Mark, and her daughter-in-law Kathleen (Greg). Her family is her greatest gift and legacy, and she treasured time spent as "Grammy" with her fifteen grandchildren Maggie, Nicholas, Clare, Daniel, Lauren, Kathie, Katie, Tom, Christina, Scott, Karin, Stephen, Tim, Joe and Liam, and her two great grandchildren, Christopher and Ethan. She is also survived by her brother Robert (Elaine) Mooney and her sister Miriam Valyo, as well as countless nieces, nephews and friends. She especially loved the extended duPont family who became her second family through her many years with them.
