Obituary of Stephen Alexopoulos

Please share a memory of Stephen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Stephen Alexopoulos on August 19, 2024. Stephen was born in Brooklyn, NY, on June 23, 1941 to Miguel and Stella Alexopoulos. Stephen was the youngest of four children. His older brothers were Peter and Thomas and surviving sister Zinnia DiLemmo. Stephen was born into humble beginnings as his parents were both immigrants from Greece. His early years were spent living within modest means above the family-owned Brooklyn diner and luncheonette. Being the youngest, Stephen eventually moved full time with his ailing parents to their Freehold, NJ summer home. Stephen was always an avid and self-motivated student. He continually pursued education all while working various jobs and helping support his family. After receiving his bachelor degree, Stephen found his way into hospital administration where he excelled to become the head Administrator of Metropolitan Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, all while completing a Bachelor's degree in business administration and in a few years to follow a Master Degree in Business Administration from Monmouth University. After solidifying his career goals, Stephen met and married Joan Anderson. Stephen and Joan were happily married for twenty-four years in both Cherry Hill, NJ and Yardley, PA until the passing of Joan in 1997. Stephen was affectionately known as "Uncle Stevie" to his four nieces Jeannie, Janice, Stephanie DiLemmo and Kyra Alexopoulos. Stephen also was the Grand Uncle to Stephen, John, Alec Favale and Alexandra Mytnick. While Stephen never had children he always served as surrogate father to all his nieces. Stephen demonstrated himself to be overwhelmingly generous with both his time and means. He was always available to mentor and support his family. One of the most interesting things about Stephen was his passion for travel and exploration. Stephen visited over one hundred-forty countries across all eight of the world's continents. These adventures were all self-planned and for extended periods. He not only immersed himself within each location traveled, but he also vividly shared his experience through writings and uncountable authentic keepsakes that he gifted his family such as unique jewelry, handmade rugs and silk scarves. It was during these adventures that Stephen met and introduced us to his travel companions and closest friends Martha and Cheryl. He will be forever remembered and missed. Rest in eternal peace "Uncle Stevie". The funeral service will be held on Monday, August 26, 2024, at 1:00pm at the FitzGerald-Sommer Funeral Home 17 S. Delaware Avenue Yardley, PA 19067. Interment will be in the Newtown Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the funeral home.
