Peter M. Thomson Obituary

Peter Thomson, 85, dedicated father, devoted husband and proud Navy veteran passed away peacefully on September 22, 2024.

Peter was born to Roderick and Charlotte Thomson in Boston, Massachusetts on September 1st, 1939. After Graduating from Dedham High School in 1957, he majored in Sociology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and later returned to obtain an MBA.

After university, he served as an officer on the Destroyer USS Storm and at Naval Air Station Pensacola, where he met Joyce, the love of his life and wife of 54 years. In 1989, Peter retired from the Naval Reserves as the executive officer of a submarine tender having reached the rank of commander. He continued to serve after retirement as an officer of the Willow Grove Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA).

Peter also had a successful civilian career, working his way to senior positions within multiple manufacturing firms where his passion for problem solving proved to be a natural fit. He was also a problem solver at home, where he tirelessly fixed cars, appliances, plumbing or the bumps and bruises that his four sons accumulated during rough housing.

When Joyce was diagnosed with heart disease, he devoted himself to researching treatments, advocating for her with doctors, and tending to her comfort. Later, when Peter was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, he became a pillar of the pulmonary fibrosis community, helping many other sufferers to understand their care options.

But the thing people remember most about Peter was his generous and outgoing personality. He was a friend to many, and a dedicated father, spending countless hours coaching his sons' hockey teams. His dedication to his sons was only surpassed by his love for Joyce.

Peter is predeceased by his parents Roderick and Charlotte Thomson, his wife Joyce Thomson, and his Aunt Dorothy Silva. He is survived by his four sons John (Kim), Brian, Roger (Angie) and Scott as well as his grandchildren Meg, Aiya, Chloe, Ginger and Zach. He is also survived by his cousin Chris (Lennart) Bergstrom.
